First of all...I love Sesame Street. And I love that my 2 younger kids call it Stefanie Street-a testament to their adoration of their beloved auntie.
I'm sure I liked Sesame Street as a child, but I specifically remember being smitten with it while nannying for 2 little boys in California. I was taken with a clever spoof on Madonna's Material Girls. That's when I realized that the writing for Sesame Street was geared towards more than just 2-year-old toddlers whose parents- or nannies- put them in front of the TV in hopes they learn their colors. It's also for the entertainment of laundry-folding mothers who may or may not need a quick confidence boost that they are being good mothers since Sesame Street is clearly quality televised programming.
After my short time as a nanny, I missed a few episodes of Sesame Street-maybe 8 or 9 years worth. And for one reason or another, Colby was deprived of Sesame Street as a toddler-- maybe because I never knew what time it was on, or because the newer, hipper shows like Little Einsteins and Backyardigans appealed to me- I mean him- more. Maybe that's why Colby didn't learn his colors until he was almost four...
Anyway, I have recently re-discovered Sesame Street, mainly because we now have a DVR which allows me to tape it for my kids' viewing pleasure, any time they wish. And after all this time, I still think the writing and content is quite clever. It's hilarious to see random celebrities like LL Cool-J do the "word of the day" without trying to laugh. And, Murray Has a Little Lamb?- genius and so funny. Seriously, tell me you've ever resisted bustin' a move to that catchy little jingle. But... I have a few bones to pick. Specifically with Elmo and Baby Bear.
It's always bugged me that Elmo speaks in third person. "Elmo has an idea..." I can just imagine how confusing this is for kids. 'Who is he talking about? I thought that was Elmo.' Or it can go the other way. The way where Elmo is modeling the incorrect grammar, just at the age where kids are learning pronouns. I don't like this. I don't like it as a Speech Therapist now and I didn't like it before I was a Speech Therapist. And, why is it that most toddlers latch on to Elmo before any other Sesame Street character? Why not Big Bird or Telly who both have excellent grammar?
And don't get me started on Baby Bear. Well, now that we're talking about it. He, or she, (do we really know it's gender?) doesn't correctly produce his /r/'s. Have you noticed this? Of course you have, it's obvious. Or is it. One moment he says a /w/ for /r/ and then magically the next moment his /r/ is perfect. This drives me crazy!! If you're going to mispronounce your /r/'s, at least do it every time! And even though he's a "baby" and babies don't usually have their /r/'s yet, he can still talk in a lame baby voice but provide a good model of speech for our children. I don't know about you, but I'm totally relying on Sesame Street for my kids' speech development.
Oh, that feels good to get off my chest. And with those complaints, I still like Sesame Street. So much in fact, that Ty is watching it right now. I mean, it's either Sesame Street or actually playing with my child while modeling good /r/'s and pronouns- but why would I do that?

You are hilarious, and I love you. Seriously so funny. I too have just rediscovered Sesame Street and me and my kids LOVE it. The elmo thing is actually kind of cute to me, but I have to agree on Baby Bear. Drives me mental! The thing that drives me most nuts (I've written about it before in one of my posts, yes its that important to repeat it) is how Cookie Monster never ever gets a cookie crumb in his actual mouth! AHHHHH. kills me each time.
I think you might be watching too much sesame street:)
You are not the first Speech therapist I've heard voice similar complaints. I think we are all ruined
What is with kid shows and the characters' speech? I just saw a commercial for a local grocery store and they used a kid with a major lisp. Maybe some people think it's cute?? Or maybe they are trying to be accepting of kids with speech and language disorders? I don't know, but the little weasel or whatever he is on Ice Age with the lateral lisp...maddening!
p.s. I love the title on this post...you're funny! And yes, I just got it :)
Ya, I'm pretty sure I'm over the cuteness of little kids with a lateral lisp. Once you've tried to correct one of those evil things in action, you'll never think it's cute again. Frontal lisp? Maybe. Lateral? NEVER Sorry anyone who has a kid with a lateral lisp or if you maybe have one yourself- call me...
hilarious! I also rediscovered Sesame street a few years ago. I always watched as a kid, but it wasn't until then did realize how clever and smart it is. Def more for the adults in alot of ways. I wish my kids enjoyed it more though... they went through their Elmos stage, but I feel like they would rather watch 10 other shows before Sesame Street. Sad.
I'm right there with you. Elmo doesn't bother me as much as Cookie monster. "Me want Cookie!" I have a kindergarten student who still uses "me" instead of "I". Thankfully Cooper hasn't pick up on that with all the Sesame Street he watches. I love to watch it with him. Some of the skits are so funny!
Sesame Street has become a lot more liberal and PC since we were kids and it bothers me a little and I too am extremely bothered by baby bear. I will need to listen more carefully to his r's. Funny.
I agree! it's like that silly ming ming on "the wonder pets" talks baby talk. seriously!!! drives me crazy. i don't want my kid to start talking like that!
If you don't want your kids to start talking in third person, never let them around me. I go in spurts where almost everything I say about myself is in third person. It drives some people nuts, but I honestly don't see what the problem is once in a while. It's still grammatically correct, isn't it? You're just talking about yourself as if you're not yourself. I read this post a long time ago and was dying laughing! But I just had to get on here and ask if you've seen a show called "Oobie" on Nick Jr.? Not only is it the creepiest show where hands talk to each other, but they all talk like that. It's the most annoying thing I've ever seen. And yes, my kids eat it up. They LOVE it!
Thanks for the heads-up Elisha. I've never heard of that show and now I know to lock it on dish network (except for that I don know how to do that so I'll have to get Colby to do it for me...).
So I've really never sat down and watched an entire episode of Sesame street. I guess I get distracted before cookie monster makes his appearance. Well i caught cookie monster yesterday and what? He's worse than Elmo! And yes Eliza, a crumb never makes it into his mouth! Who else is guilty of poor speech, language and/or manners on that show? Looks like I need to endure the whole hour
