My favorite thing in the world is to overhear sweet little exchanges between Colby and Kara. Last night, Kara was up several times during the night throwing up. Each time she was up, Colby would wake up and try to help the situation. The 3rd time Kara got up, Colby tried to help by offering one of his blankets to sleep with since hers were soiled. She was excited about picking one out and chose Colby's airplane quilt that was made by his grandma which had crocheted airplanes all over it. After thanking Colby for sharing his blanket, I had Kara choose a different one since I wasn't risking throw-up on that quilt. When I finally got both of them back to bed, I overheard a sweet little conversation between the two of them. This, of course, being the best I can remember from 3:00 in the morning. Colby went into Kara's room and said, "Kara, if you wake up with a tummy ache again, you come and get me. I'll take you to mom or dad, okay?" And Kara would respond, "Okay." Colby told her this at least 3 times so that she new exactly what to do if she woke up again. They continued talking for a little while (in their separate rooms) and then I heard Kara get up. She went to the bathroom to do get a drink and while doing so I heard Colby say, "Owe. My bum hearts!" (sorry to be graphic). And immediately Kara yelled from the bathroom, "Need a bandaid?" Colby was quick to remind Kara that bandaids don't go on your bum. I thought it was cute.
Since I'm on the Colby and Kara subject, I thought I'd share a few things they have been up to lately since this is supposed to be my journal and I don't seem to update the new things they are doing.
Colby's imagination has really taken off. He loves to play preschool, mom and dad, or pirates. When he has friends over, I usually hear him take the initiative to start pretending and then he barks out orders as to who will be who. He always wants to be the dad (whew!) and makes his friends be the mom and/or baby. My favorite is when he and Kara play pirates. He gets a hold of my KitchenAid dough hook and uses that for his hook and then has Kara follow him around the house while calling her "baby pirate." His favorite line is, "Baby pirate, say arrrrrr." and Kara dutifully follows with a hearty, "arrrrrrr."
He is loving preschool and can't wait to go every morning. He's just barely catching on to letters and the sounds they make and he is really into finding words within words. Multiple times a day, he'll say something like, "Mom, pirate says, pie. Pie, pirate." He also is playing soccer on Saturdays and loves it. I have pictures to post of this along with bazillions of other summer pictures that are yet to make it to the blog.
Kara is growing into a little girl! She has just recently been potty trained! Yippee! No more diapers for me!! Well, not entirely yet- we're still working on nighttime. She has become a little chatter bug and will talk your ear off all day long. She is using about 5-7 word sentences (sorry, I had to add this in since I look for these kinds of skills). She wakes up talking and singing and helps me to be in a better mood when I wake up. She cracks us up every day with the things that come out of her mouth. The other day she was trying to pinch my arm with a bag clip. When I kept pulling my arm away, she said, "Mom. C'mon. You be brave." She is also really into tattling on Colby (well, I guess this isn't really new, she's been doing this awhile), but is always coming up with creative things to tattle on. Her latest is to tell me when Colby says bad words. Apparently, the word, "silly" has become a bad word to Kara. She will tell me, "Mom, Colby said silly. He needs hot sauce in his mouth." She is also still really into dolls and stuffed animals and loves to put them to sleep, or change their diapers.
The picture I posted is of Kara and one of her change of clothes. Since potty training, she has decided she loves to change her clothes and does it 3-4 times a day. Lately I've let her run around in whatever she's chosen because I am the kind of mom that embraces my child's creativity. Okay, that's a lie. It's because I'm lazy and I get tired of changing her back into her clothes and frankly, I just don't really care what she...and I(those of you who live by me know just how true this has been the last few months), look like. So yes, I take her out in public with mismatched clothes, a different shoe on each foot, etc. Besides, I think it's funny. I decided to start taking pictures of her choices because they are getting funnier and funnier. The picture above is of her wearing tights that fit over a year ago, on backwards, with no skirt, and with her snow boots. Hey, atleast it all kinda matches!

When it rains, it pours
I just got called to be the relief society pianist. To some, this calling may be a cinch and perhaps a dream calling. But for me, the scariest calling I have had yet. I am not a piano player. I would like to be a piano player, but am not. I took lessons as a kid but gave it up. I started lessons a few years ago and gave it up again when I got pregnant with Kara. I have a basic knowledge and can barely plunk out Sweet Hour of Prayer as long as I'm in a room by myself.
It's just funny how fantastically timed this calling was. I started this new job last week and is probably the scariest new job I've ever had, therefore inducing plenty of stress in itself.
I guess I can only do this. If you are in my ward and are reading this and attend relief society, just bear with me and keep on singing even when I stop and can't get the notes right. I also wouldn't mind a quick prayer or two on my behalf, as I will be pleading and begging myself, that I will improve at a more-than-normal rapid pace and that this calling will soon not be the stress of my life.
Like my mom and several others have said, this should be good for me and I guess (it's hard to say it since I'm so terrified) I'm thankful for the opportunity to develop a talent I always wished I had.
I have butterflies in my stomach as I type this.

First Day at a New Job (for the 30 somethin'th time)
Exciting.
Humbling.
Overwhelming.
Exhausting.
What the crap was I thinking?
Hopeful.
Stressed.
What I fear may be, the first day actually seeing patients.
Scared.
Humbled (again).
Humiliated.
Fired.
Relieved.

Finally, a stamp in my little blue book
This may be the longest post ever posted so please proceed at your own discretion. You're sure to find massive amounts of pictures and description, most of which may bore you to tears. I promise I won't be offended if you just skip this post because like Amy Rosenthal said in her book, Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life, "in the end, no one really wants to hear about your trip." But of course I am dying to talk about it to whoever will listen and of course to document our splendors since this blog is my scrapbook. With that lovely introduction, our little tale begins like this...
I finally made it out of the country! And besides Cameron's mission to Korea, this was his first time also. Like all our trips, we decided less than one week before leaving that we were going to give it shot. My sister agreed to take both the kids for the entire time in return of us watching her kids so she and Rich could finally go on vacation.
Delta added a direct flight to Paris in February. Since then Cameron and I have talked about going, but never really thought it was possible, at least not so soon, until we found out the flight was being cut back in October. This was our last chance to go. With very little time to even plan what we'd do once we got there, we tried for the Saturday flight and failed. Since we had all the arrangements made to be gone for nearly a week we decided that we'd go somewhere else. Flights were terribly full to almost everywhere so we just went home. Even though the flight to Paris looked worse than the day before, we decided at the last minute to go try again on Sunday. You never know when flying standby. We barely said goodbye to the kids and Cameron even told them, "we'll be back in a few hours." Well, we weren't. Miraculously, we were on our way to Paris!! And seriously, it was a miracle. The flight was oversold and they were asking for volunteers to give up their tickets. We've learned when flying standby to never leave the gate until that plane is taxing out to the runway. The flight was full and there were still 2 standby passengers ahead of us with more seniority. Right before the doors were closed, the gate agent yelled our names and told us to hurry up, cause we were on the flight. They whisked us so fast, I didn't have time to think. I had to hide my phone in the airplane just to text my sister that we got on. We're not sure how 2 seats magically appeared and the 2 people in front of us left the gate when we all thought the airplane was full. It did not hit me until the plane was taking off that we were actually going to Paris- a dream of ours since we got married.
The flight was not fun. Despite taking a sleeping pill, I barely slept 30 minutes in my tiny little middle seat (not that I'm complaining or anything) during the 10 hour flight. We arrived in Paris at about 3:00 in the morning, Utah time, but were pretty stoked that we were there. We had no place to stay. We didn't speak French. And we didn't know how to get out of the airport. After nearly 3 hours trying to use the Internet, make a phone call, asking mean people questions, being frustrated out of our minds, and maybe a few tears from Cameron (all right of course it was me), we finally got ourselves on the train to go to a hotel that we hoped existed, but had no reservations for. After all this, I still had the energy to shop at the first store we saw that was actually in the Metro station and I bought something! My mood started to brighten slightly.
We got off the wrong Metro station and walked for what seemed like miles with all our baggage until we got to the Hotel. It was one I had found on the Internet at home. We didn't have a reservation since we didn't think we'd actually make it there. Thank goodness it was vacant and we able to book it for the next 3 nights. It was bare bones, but all you need in Paris is a place to sleep and shower, right?
Quickly after changing clothes, we headed out. After not sleeping for nearly 24 hours and being frustrated to tears and walking up set after set of these stairs,
I encountered my first little "taste" of Paris.
The Sacre-Coeur Basilique, or Church of the Sacred Heart.
This is Notre-Dame. I don't think I've ever seen a building like this in my life. It was so intricately detailed, I couldn't believe my eyes.

First Day of Pre-School (the 2nd time around)
The saddest part was when I came inside from sending him with his carpool, Kara was standing on the couch looking outside the window and was crying. When I asked what was wrong, she said, "I want to play with Colby awhile." When I explained that he was going to preschool and she gets to stay home with mommy and do fun things, that wasn't good enough. She just kept saying she wanted to play with Colby awhile. It broke my heart! I'm so glad those two love each other and love playing together so much. It's more than I could ever ask for.
